Fragrance Discovery
Ten fragrances that show how the chypre structure can stay recognizable while moving in very different directions.
Chypre isn't a scent so much as a skeleton. The word comes from the French for Cyprus, tied back to François Coty's 1917 fragrance Chypre, which set the template almost everyone since has worked from: bright citrus, usually bergamot, up top, and a base built on oakmoss, labdanum, and patchouli underneath. That contrast, sharp and green against dark and mossy, is what makes a chypre recognisable even a century later.
Modern niche houses rarely build pure chypre anymore. More often they borrow the structure and bend it toward leather, oriental spice, or something else entirely. These ten show that range, some closer to the original formula, some using it as a starting point rather than a rulebook.
10 Chypre Fragrances to Know

Bois et Cuir Raffiné — Vertus
Bergamot and grapefruit open it classically enough, but patchouli and oakmoss in the base pull this toward a leather chypre rather than a floral one. Magnolia and lavender soften the middle before sandalwood and ambergris close it refined. One of the more structurally faithful entries on this list.
Top Notes
Bergamot • Grapefruit • Neroli • Galbanum
Heart Notes
Magnolia • Patchouly • Lavender • Amber • Cistus
Base Notes
Sandalwood • Musk • Ambergris • Leather • Tonka Bean • Oakmoss

Hacivat X — Nishane
The house calls this one a citrus chypre directly, and it earns the label. Pineapple and bergamot open bright and a little unusual, lime and jasmine carry the middle, and patchouli with cedarwood and Haitian vetiver close it dry. Composed by Julien Rasquinet, this is the most textbook chypre structure on this list.

Lime • Jasmine • Orange Blossom

Patchouli • Cedarwood • Vetiver Oil Haiti

Chaos — Vertus
Lemon and marine notes open it fresh; jasmine and white flowers carry a bright floral middle, and dry woods with ambergris and oakmoss close to it grounded. The oakmoss is doing real chypre work here, even with a marine opening that most classic formulas wouldn't have used.

Jasmine • Patchouly • White Flowers
Base Notes
Drywoody • Ambergris • Oakmoss

Tobacco Sapphire — Boadicea The Victorious
Anisic cumin and mandarin open it; magnolia and heliotrope settle into the middle, and a genuinely dense base runs through mosses, resinous woods, and oudy vanilla. This bends the chypre structure toward oriental territory, smoky and dramatic rather than crisp.

Hasu — Boadicea The Victorious
Cypress and sage open it aromatic and green, rose and osmanthus carry a floral heart alongside hay, and balsams with moss and patchouli close it out pagan and woody. The moss and patchouli pairing keeps this tethered to chypre roots even as the top notes wander into fully aromatic territory.

Rose • Osmanthus • Nutmeg • Iris • Hay
Base Notes

Mana — Nishane
Composed by Christian Provenzano, cardamom and saffron open it, Turkish rose and castoreum settle into a suede-and-oud heart, and a resinous base including moss and patchouli closes it weighty. This one uses chypre's dark, mossy foundation but builds an oud composition on top of it rather than a classic floral one.

Base Notes
Cistus Labdanum • Patchouli • Sandalwood • Moss • Guaiacwood • Benzoin • Olibanum • Musk

Aqua Sapphire — Boadicea The Victorious
Pineapple and rum open tropical, seaweed and rose de Mai carry a clean marine heart, and cypriol with mosses closes it out. This one leans furthest from the classic formula, more aquatic chypre than anything Coty would recognise, but the mossy base keeps the DNA traceable.

Cypriol • Mosses • Vanilla • Ambered Woods

Dubai Fakhama — The Spirit of Dubai
Composed by Asghar Adam Ali, rose opens this one immediately rather than citrus; oud and spice carry the middle, and a base including oakmoss alongside amber and leather closes it densely. The oakmoss connects it back to chypre structure, but rose-forward rather than citrus-forward, and considerably more maximalist than the category's origins.

Haibah — The Spirit of Dubai
Also composed by Asghar Adam Ali, apple and saffron open a sprawling top, a mossy quality sits right in the heart alongside oud and rose Damascena, and rare Indian agarwood oil closes the base. The chypre reference here is more atmospheric than structural, a mossy, earthy quality inside a much larger oriental composition.

Hedonistic — Clive Christian
Composed by Julie Pluchet, mate tea and black cherry open it; tobacco and jasmine carry a rich, layered heart, and labdanum with leather and vanilla close it deep. The furthest departure from chypre on this list, gourmand rather than mossy, included here because labdanum is doing some of the same grounding work oakmoss usually handles.
Top Notes

Heart Notes
Tobacco • Jasmine • Orris • Papyrus • Maple • Caramel • Violet • Rose • Whiskey
Base Notes
Labdanum • Ambers • Leather • Tonka • Vanilla
Reading a Modern Chypre
The closer a fragrance sits to Hacivat X or Bois et Cuir Raffiné, the more it honours the original 1917 formula: citrus up top, moss and patchouli holding down the base. The further you move toward Hedonistic or Aqua Sapphire, the more the word "chypre" is doing atmospheric work rather than structural work.
Neither approach is wrong. It just helps to know which one you're actually buying.
