RELIQVIA — from the Latin reliquiae, meaning what remains. After his tribute to Mario Giacomelli, Filippo Sorcinelli returned to Senigallia to describe an extraordinary place: the Church of the Cross, one of the jewels of Italian Baroque, built in 1608 and custodian of important relics of Christ's Passion. As organist and artistic director of the still-active brotherhood, Sorcinelli knows these walls intimately — golden wood finely carved, incensed steps toward the high altar where the seventeenth-century statue of the dead Christ is kept, visible only once a year. The composition opens with Pine, Mastic, Cloves, Amyris, and Orange Blossom — the green freshness of the oratory's hidden gardens, the spice of ancient rites. The heart reveals Incense, Guaiac Wood, Sandalwood, Cashmere Wood, and Patchouli — stratified smoke, the nail of Passion, torba from solemn and sacred years. The base settles into Elemi, Smoke, Sweet Orange, Black Currant, Nutmeg, and Tobacco — the closet always closed, the precious custody that reminds us time is likely to be consumed without leaving a clear furrow. Holy clouds of elemi and Scots pine deepen an already smoky, woody scent, while clove and nutmeg give warm, comforting spice. A deeply personal kind of incense, shot through with peppered pine and smoke.
