Colombus day: The Scent of Discovery

Colombus day: The Scent of Discovery

Columbus Day

6 Perfumes for a Spirit of Exploration

Six fragrances inspired by Madrid, Barcelona and the world of flamenco.

Discovery has always been part of fragrance.

A perfume can take you somewhere without ever leaving the room. A burst of bergamot can suggest a different climate. Incense can evoke a sacred place. Leather, spice, woods or flowers can bring an unfamiliar landscape into focus.

For Columbus Day, we're looking at six fragrances that capture that feeling of discovery in very different ways. From Madrid and Barcelona to the world of flamenco, each one offers its own interpretation of place, culture and atmosphere.

La Sabia Madrid

Conquista

Conquista

Conquista opens with bergamot, cinnamon and lemon, immediately giving the fragrance a bright, spicy character. Clary sage, cypress and orange flower bring more aromatic depth, while Madagascar vanilla bourbon and tonka bean soften the base.

It feels like a fragrance built around movement: fresh at first, then warmer and more textured as it unfolds.

Dos Besos

Dos Besos

Dos Besos explores a very different kind of intensity.

Raspberry, ginger and cardamom open the fragrance before leather and jasmine take over the heart. Styrax, oud and patchouli create a darker base, giving the composition a distinctly sensual character.

It's a reminder that discovery is not always about distance. Sometimes it's about emotion, movement and the unexpected combination of familiar materials.

Carner Barcelona

Tardes

Tardes

Tardes is inspired by a late summer afternoon stroll through wheat fields, a serene and enveloping fragrance that blends floral and woody notes.

Egyptian geranium, rose and almond open the fragrance before Virginian cedarwood, celery and plum shape the heart. Tonka, musk and heliotrope soften the base.

Here, discovery is quieter: a landscape that unfolds slowly rather than all at once.

Palo Santo

Palo Santo

Palo Santo is a sweet and woody fragrance, warm with caramel, tonka bean and vetiver.

Indian davana and a rum accord open the composition, followed by warm milk, Paraguayan guaiacum wood and tonka. Moroccan cedarwood, Haitian vetiver and Dominican amyris form the base.

Its materials come from different corners of the world, which makes it a fragrance about gathering as much as traveling.

Flamenco

Flamenco

Flamenco translates one of Spain's most recognizable art forms into fragrance.

Raspberry, violet and orris create the opening before jasmine, rosewood and red rose bring the heart into focus. Musk, amberwood and cedarwood give the composition its final depth.

The fragrance is inspired by the raw emotion and fiery spirit of flamenco, making it less about reproducing a place and more about capturing its energy.

Matador

Matador

Matador takes a darker, more spiritual approach.

Rosewood, incense and cumin lead into jasmine, magnolia and rose, while musk, coconut and sandalwood create the base.

There's an interesting tension between the incense and spice of the opening and the softer floral heart. It's another interpretation of Spanish character, but one that feels very different from Flamenco.

Six Fragrances. Six Ways to Explore.

The most interesting thing about fragrance is that discovery does not have to mean going somewhere new.

It can mean smelling a familiar ingredient in a completely different way. Finding a landscape in a wheat field at the end of summer. Following a fragrance from bright citrus into woods and spice. Or simply encountering a perfume that makes you curious about the place, history or idea behind it.

Starting this month, 8motiv is offering 12% off, so there has never been a better time to explore something new.
