Perfumer Spotlight
Fragrances That Show His Range
From Seville's orange blossom to aquatic fougère, three fragrances reveal a perfumer who refuses one signature.
Alberto Morillas grew up in Seville, and it shows in almost everything he's composed since. Rose and orange blossoms from his hometown turn up again across his work, alongside the citrus, sea notes, and white florals, jasmine, tuberose, neroli, that have become something close to a signature. He won the Prix François Coty in 2003, one of perfumery's most respected honors, and now works out of Geneva, a long way from the gardens that still seem to shape most of what he makes. He's described the job in a way that sticks: "Perfumery is the mirror of society. I am the artist who interprets these emotions."
Three fragrances in the 8motiv collection carry his name, and together they show more range than his reputation for "Mediterranean citrus" might suggest.
3 Fragrances to Know
Elisire
Jasmin Paradis

This one leans directly into Morillas's home territory. Neroli, bergamot, and orange blossom open it, pink grapefruit adding a sharper edge than a typical citrus opening, before sambac jasmine and an unusual mate absolute settle into the heart. Musks, ambrox, and incense close it out warmer than the bright top notes suggest. If you want to hear Morillas in his most recognizable register, start here.
Top NotesNeroli, Bergamot, Orange Blossom, Pink Grapefruit
Heart NotesSambac Jasmine, Mate Absolute
Base NotesMusks, Ambrox, Incense, Olibanum
Nishane
Deziro

A genuine departure. Deziro is built as an aquatic fougère, mandarin and ambergris opening into a marine accord, then star anise, carrot, and mint taking the heart somewhere unexpected before geranium and cypriol round it out. Sandalwood and Haitian vetiver anchor the base. Nothing about this reads as the Seville-garden perfumer; it's proof he is not working from one playbook.
Top NotesMandarin, Ambergris, Marine Accord
Heart NotesStar Anise, Carrot, Mint, Cypriol, Geranium
Base NotesMusk, Ambrettolide, Sandalwood, Haitian Vetiver
Elisire
Poudre Désir

Back to florals, but softer and powderier than Jasmin Paradis. Bergamot, mandarin, and pink pepper open it, then iris, Egyptian jasmine, and gardenia build a dense white floral heart. Musks, cedarwood, and heliotrope close it tender rather than radiant, the quietest of the three.
Top NotesBergamot, Mandarin, Pink Pepper
Heart NotesIris, Egyptian Jasmine, Jasmine Petals, Gardenia
Base NotesMusks, Cedarwood, Heliotrope
Three Fragrances, One Throughline
Jasmin Paradis and Poudre Désir both circle back to the citrus-and-white-floral territory Morillas is known for, but Deziro breaks the pattern entirely, and that's the more interesting story. A perfumer who won a career-defining prize for one specific register and then kept building outside of it says something about how little "signature style" limits real range.
