Fragrance Discovery
Distinctive, Experimental, and Unbound
Five fragrances showing what happens when niche perfumery has no single regional formula to follow.
North American niche perfumery does not announce itself with a single accent the way some regional scenes do. There's no unifying oud tradition, no shared citrus heritage to lean on. What shows up instead is range; houses building distinct creative points of view rather than working from one regional playbook. These five, from Mind Games and Precious Liquid, show two very different approaches to that same freedom.
5 Fragrances to Know
Gourmand
Mind Games
Mentor

Composed by Carlos Vials, salted caramel and dark plum open it rich immediately, amber coffee and crème de cassis carry an indulgent middle, and Boya oud with sandalwood and tonka bean closes it complex. This is gourmand perfumery built with real structure underneath the sweetness, not just a dessert accord layered on top.
Top NotesSalted Caramel, Italian Lemon, Dark Plum
Heart NotesAmber Coffee, Crème De Cassis
Base NotesBoya Oud, Sandalwood, Tonka Bean

Mind Games
Queening

Also composed by Christelle Laprade, clean cotton and apple open soft, orris and rum settle into a dreamy middle alongside saffron, and whipped vanilla bean with fluffy musk closes cocooning. Where Mentor reaches for complexity, Queening reaches for comfort, proof the same house can hold both instincts.

Counterplay

Composed by Christelle Laprade as well, melon and guava open it juicy; osmanthus and orange blossom carry a genuinely bright floral heart, and sandalwood with pink pepper closes it grounded. The most straightforwardly fruity floral entry on this list, and a reminder that gourmand is not the only register this house works in.

Sangria Oak

Composed by Richard Herpin, davana and pear open into a genuine sangria accord, unusual and specific, alongside pink grapefruit and rum. Oak and labdanum carry the heart, and patchouli with moss closes it warm. A concept of fragrance that actually commits to its reference rather than treating it as a marketing gesture.

Acqua Oud

Also composed by Richard Herpin, bergamot and pineapple open bright and marine, a genuine marine accord carries the heart, and patchouli absolu with ambergris, red seaweed, and oud closes it deep. Aquatic and oud rarely share a bottle this convincingly; most attempts pick one register and abandon the other halfway through.

Two Houses, No Single Regional Voice
Mind Games moves between gourmand richness and fruity brightness without settling into one lane. Precious Liquid pairs concepts, sangria and aquatic-oud, that most houses would keep separate. Neither is trying to sound like a European counterpart or stake out some singular "American" identity. That refusal to settle into one register might be the most accurate description of the region's niche scene there is.
